Listen

My happy place

We’re into the 3rd or 4th week of quarantine and like you, I’m sure, I’m getting cabin fever. One thing I’ve found that helps calm my mind is sitting on my back stoop, closing my eyes, and just listening. With spring under way, there’s a multitude of bird songs, insect buzzing, breeze blowing in the trees, and yes, even sounds of trains and traffic.

From DMX to Dr. Who to probably every teacher ever, we’ve been told to “just listen”. Why is that so hard to learn? I believe it’s because we’re so distracted by the daily grind of life, technology and the endless stream of information (good and bad) and rushing to the next thing on our to-do lists. Did I send that email to Tom? I need to make sure the kids have clean socks for tomorrow. Oh, and need to get more dog food. Did I water the plants? Need to pay X, Y, and Z bill. Better get some more groceries too. And on and on and on.

Research shows trying to do more than one thing at a time can actually diminish productivity and performance. While something as mundane as watching TV and folding laundry isn’t a big deal. However, driving in heavy traffic requires more focus and trying to multitask in that situation can be dangerous.

So, what can we do about it? We have an opportunity to reset and yes, even unplug. Sometimes we get so busy that we don’t realize the little things are really the big things that matter. Listen to the sound of rain on your roof, the wind in the trees, the sound of coffee brewing. Call or video chat with your best friends or even that friend you haven’t talked to in a while. Check in with your neighbors and loved ones.

But most of all, just listen. You’ll be amazed at the clarity and calmness that will follow — including the hope that when we can finally get back to “normal”, it will be a better one.
